Transitional Kindergarten & Kindergarten

TK–K Program Overview

French Gulch-Whiskeytown School District offers a Transitional Kindergarten through Kindergarten (TK–K) program that provides young learners with a safe, supportive, and structured start to school.

Our TK–K program is designed to help children build confidence, routines, and foundational academic skills while developing a strong sense of belonging in a small-school environment.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Transitional Kindergarten is an introductory year for children who are new to school.

Children enter TK at many different developmental stages — that is expected.
TK focuses on:

  • building daily routines and school readiness,

  • developing social and emotional skills,

  • strengthening early literacy and math foundations, and

  • learning how to participate in a classroom community.

TK provides a gentle, supportive entry into school while preparing students for the structure and expectations of Kindergarten.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten builds on the foundation established in TK and provides a structured, predictable learning environment with clear routines and academic expectations.

In Kindergarten, students engage in:

  • daily literacy and math instruction,

  • consistent classroom routines,

  • guided independent work,

  • and social development through collaborative learning.

The goal of Kindergarten is to ensure students feel confident, capable, and prepared for continued success in elementary school.

A Connected TK–K Experience

TK and Kindergarten are designed as a connected two-year experience.
Students who begin in TK transition smoothly into Kindergarten with familiar routines, expectations, and staff support.

This continuity helps children feel secure while allowing families to build long-term relationships with the school.

Small School Environment

As a small rural school, French Gulch-Whiskeytown School District offers:

  • low student-to-staff ratios,

  • strong relationships between families and staff,

  • individualized attention within a structured program, and

  • a calm, supportive learning environment.
